How this site is made, and what it will not do.

Where the information comes from

We verify against primary sources and never copy them. A tradition’s own authorities and texts tell us whether a claim is true; the sentences here are written by us. Every source is graded, and a claim about what a tradition teaches must be sourced to that tradition, not to an outside summary or to a competing one.

Where there is no official body

Most religions have no central authority. Catholicism has the Holy See; Sunni Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism and Protestantism have nothing equivalent. Where authority is distributed we cite several sources, each labelled with whose view it represents, and the page attributes accordingly.

What we will not do

• We do not say or imply which tradition is correct.
• We do not rank, rate or score religions, and there are no comments.
• We do not run advertising against religious content.
• We do not present a computed date as though an authority had announced it.

Corrections

Errors about someone’s religion are not ordinary bugs. Correction requests are answered within five working days, and substantive changes are recorded on the page with the date they were made.

Review

Before a tradition’s pages are published, someone who practises or professionally studies that tradition reads them, and is named on the page. Anything still marked as a draft has not yet been through that.
